KASAI laboratory in WASEDA University, located in the heart of Tokyo, is devoted to theoretical and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine learning, Optimization, Signal Processing, and Data Science. Research areas at the center include machine learning algorithms, theory, and application, including deep learning, generative models (e.g., diffusion model), interpretability/explainability, reinforcement learning, representation learning, structural learning, optimization, and more.
Our laboratory is looking for talented, dedicated students passionate about researching all aspects of theoretical and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine learning, Optimization, Signal Processing, and Data Science and having a strong background in mathematics or machine learning.
Applicants from all countries and all ages are very welcome. Our laboratory is multinational.
Please note that we currently do not accept any ”Non-degree Research Students (科目等履修生)” except special scholarships.
How to apply?
If you are interested in joining us as a student in a doctoral or master’s course, please follow the following steps:
Step 1. Contact the Laboratory via Email:
To express interest in joining our laboratory, please email hiroyuki.kasai [at] waseda.jp with the following documents attached:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Academic Transcript
- Short Research Proposal
Applicants for the doctoral course must have at least one or two published papers in international conferences or journals closely related to the research field of the Laboratory. Please attach these publications to the email as well.
Step 2. Registration with the Laboratory’s Entry Form:
If you receive a response from the laboratory and are invited to proceed to the next step, please register using the entry form.
Note that a detailed research proposal is required for all applicants. The template file can be downloaded here. If you are currently in China and cannot access the entry form above, please use this form.
Step 3. Your confirmation and feedback from the Laboratory by Email:
After completing the registration, send a confirmation email to hiroyuki.kasai [at] waseda.jp to ensure that your submission has been received. You will receive feedback from our laboratory. Please note that you may not receive a response if your academic background and research interests do not align with the laboratory’s activities.
Step 4. First Online Interview:
The online interview will be conducted according to the schedule specified by the Laboratory. The laboratory will communicate details such as the method, content, assignments, and online interview URL to the applicant.
Step 5. Notification of First Result:
If you receive a positive result confirming your eligibility for formal entry, you may proceed to the next step. Please note that even if you pass this first stage, you may still fail the final examination in Step 8.
Step 6. Formal Application to the University:
Follow the university’s instructions to begin the formal application process for the entrance examination. If you require further details, please contact the admissions office (not the Laboratory). Once your application is submitted, send a confirmation email to Hiroyuki.kasai [at] waseda.jp.
Step 7. Entrance Examination:
We will evaluate your admission based on the submitted documents, assignments, and the results of previous interviews. If necessary, we may require additional assignments or interviews. Please follow the instructions provided by the University. Interviews and assignments vary depending on the course and type of admission examination.
Step 8. Notification of Final Result:
You will receive the final result of your entrance examination.
